Rooftop Extensions and FastClad are the Perfect Combination
With the ever increasing cost of land, then developing on the roof of the building you already own comes with no land cost, but it does have other challenges.
Three storey rooftop extension in the heart of London’s Whitechapel
The additional weight of a rooftop development needs to be transmitted safely to foundations of the existing building, so minimising the load is of paramount importance. Lightweight construction such as was employed at Melvin Hall in London’s Golders Green (below) minimises those forces that would otherwise be too great for the structure to support.
Crane and material lift access to roof
Our FastClad A2 product is Building Regulation compliant for residential use over 18m and is capable of utilising any brick manufactured to EN 771-1, meaning an unrivalled choice of brick finish for our clients.
A rooftop build needn’t have a big impact on residents or occupiers, here using a lift and occasional crane to get the materials onto the roof, where steel framed wall panels were craned into place, and once made water tight, the FastClad’s steel support system was attached to the steel framing system.
FastClad support system fixed to SFS
FastClad’s standard components are one man lift and fix making the install manageable within the confines of the scaffolding.
Confined installation is easily achieved
The bricks were chosen to blend with the existing buildings masonry, with the client asking us to use the Typhoon Blend Red Stock from AAB, which was particularly economic as both faces of the brick could be used (so 30 bricks per M2 rather than 60!).
Dual faced stock bricks chosen by the client
Pointed in situ with a gunned lime mortar to match the existing building, once the scaffold was down it was hard to see what was new-build and what was existing, although it was a very grey and rainy day when the photograph below was taken!
