CASE STUDY
Hedge House
Project Overview
Hedge House stands as a remarkable example of innovative design and sustainable architecture. Located on a sprawling 6.5-acre estate near Knowle, close to Solihull, West Midlands, this two-story dwelling spans 10,450 square feet, measuring 180 feet in length and 33 feet in width. Hedge House is not just a residential property; it is an architectural statement inspired by the agricultural brick and timber barns that dot the local landscape.
Architectural Vision and Execution
The original concept for Hedge House was conceived by architect David Sheppard, who envisioned a structure that harmonized with its rural surroundings while maintaining the grandeur of large-scale agricultural buildings.
The project's execution was entrusted to BPN Architects by the client, 10M, who sought to translate Sheppard's vision into a practical yet striking reality. EH Smith played a pivotal role in advising on the selection of materials that would define the building's aesthetic and functional qualities.
Innovative Use of FastClad
One of the key aspects that sets Hedge House apart is its consistent use of FastClad, a revolutionary cladding system, across both the external envelope and the interior spaces. The superstructure of the house is composed of a steel frame, and larch and locally sourced brick which has been manufactured into brick cladding. FastClad was chosen for its ability to seamlessly integrate with these materials, providing both durability and a distinctive visual appeal.
Externally, FastClad was used to achieve the rhythmic repetition of locally sourced brick and larch, which was felled by the Forestry Commission in Cannock Chase. This not only reinforced the building's connection to its environment but also provided a uniform and powerful geometric consistency to the structure's form.
Internally, FastClad continued to play a crucial role, creating a cohesive aesthetic that extended from the exterior walls into the heart of the home. The use of the same materials inside and out blurred the lines between the indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing the property's overall sense of scale and unity.
Conclusion
Hedge House is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and the strategic use of innovative materials. By employing FastClad throughout both the exterior and interior, the project achieved a harmonious blend of form and function, staying true to its agricultural inspirations while delivering a modern, sustainable living space. This case study underscores the importance of material selection in realizing an architectural vision that is both practical and visually compelling
