Revitalising Bell Court, Stratford-upon-Avon
Project Overview
The £30 million redevelopment of Bell Court in Stratford-upon-Avon represents a transformative project aimed at revitalising the heart of this historic town. The ambitious scheme included over 70,000 ft² of retail space, new restaurants, leisure facilities, and a four-screen Everyman cinema, all set within a sensitive conservation area. The project involved the redevelopment of the former Debenhams and H&M stores, situated within the Stratford Conservation Area and incorporating a Grade II listed building.
Planning and Design
Alder King Planning Consultants were engaged to manage the complex planning and listed building consent processes. Their expertise ensured that the redevelopment respected the historical significance of the area while meeting modern requirements. Mountford Pigott, appointed from the outset, provided comprehensive design services.
Construction Solutions
To streamline the construction process and maintain the aesthetic integrity of the new structures, FastClad was used as an alternative to traditional masonry. This choice minimised the build program and facilitated the construction of spandrels and piers, ensuring they were indistinguishable from the rest of the facades. FastClad provided the brick aesthetic essential for blending the new development with the historic surroundings.
Heritage and Material
EH Smith collaborated with the architects and contractors to select a facing brick that reflected the heritage of Stratford-upon-Avon's historic setting. This careful selection process ensured that the new construction harmonised with the existing architectural character of the town.
